Here is a song about mourning the lack of a music career. I understand that is a strange sentence. I guess I knew early on that I was not going to be a musician in a professional sense, and it kind of hit me hard. Without going too deep here, I will leave it at this: when you know that your dream is for others, and not for you, writing a song like this can be therapeutic.

There is also a bit in the end about wanting to sell out. Growing up in the 90's, the idea of being a sell-out was the worst. I was looking at it as a bit of a privilege though. One cannot sell out when there are zero opportunities. At that point, it would be an honor to be stolen from.

So yeah, not my happiest song, but I really like it. I think it might be some of my most ambitious singing, and the guitars are interesting and playful.

Lyrics

What happened?
You were promising
A relaxing
Of conformity
But what happened
Was the same thing

Just save it till summer now
Release in November now
Release in December now
It has to sell somehow now

We both know just exactly what it was

This will not be a hit
But if you listen real hard
You might feel it
I always wanted to sell out
I tried so hard
I simply found myself incapable
So before I die I will try
And I will die trying
And after I die I will continue to try

Recording Notes

Most of this song was improvised and written as it was recorded. I went after dynamic swelling and contrasting changes. I feel like you would enjoy this song more if you were riding alone in a car and allowed yourself to sing along, and I mean really belt it out. Then you would feel the deep release that this song can give.
